Sweet Lucy’s Smokehouse

Sweet Lucy's Smokehouse

Making the world a better place for BBQ lovers with our deee-licious eat-in, take-out and catering!

This place knows BBQ.  Are you in Philadelphia and craving some pulled pork or beef brisket?  Look no further.  Jump on I95 immediately, get off, go to Sweet Lucy’s and order everything off the menu!  This restaurant offers up some of the best saucy meats in Philly.  Named after a good looking pup, this place has a southern flavor and style like you would find in Memphis or Texas.  Trust us when we say that this place is the real deal.  Not only is the food good but on Wednesday nights, it’s an all you can eat buffet.  Can Bar-B-Que get any better?  Probably not.  But if it does, Sweet Lucy’s Smokehouse will be the first to figure it out.

Moriarty’s Restaurant and Irish Pub

Looking for a great, traditional Irish Pub, but your smack in the middle of Center City Philadelphia? No problem – just walk to Walnut between 11th and 12th streets.

Moriarty’s has everything you’d expect from a great pub. Excellent beer selection, including Guinness of course, and it is really one of those places one can say “get anything – everything on the menu is fantastic.” Standard burger and sandwich place, but they do offer traditional Irish dishes like Fish and Chips, and Shepherd’s Pie. A great touch is that there are 10 different ways to order your burger or chicken sandwich. They’re named after the streets in Philly surrounding the restaurant. You want mushrooms and cheese on that? Order a “Broad Street.” Sautéed onions and peppers? You belong on “Spruce Street.” Also, try the wings – voted Best in Philly multiple times!

The pub does tend to get crowded, and often. I’ve personally been here many a time, but the crowds don’t bother me. Service is quick – food comes in about 10 – 15 no matter how crowded the bar gets. But once the food comes, it appears the wait staff moves on and you have a tendency to wait awhile for a chance to ask for extra napkins or another drink. Can’t say I blame them – more and more people are coming into the pub! It’s an excellent dinner choice if your journeys take you to that part of town to see theatre at the Walnut or Forrest, the Convention Center, or you spent a whole day in Chinatown and maybe aren’t feeling eating the food (which by the way is also excellent depending on where).

One of my favorite spots in town, it’s great for a weekend nightlife bar for the 30 and under crowd; go upstairs to the mini-bar, find a booth, and enjoy the karaoke and company of your friends and real Philly locals looking to unwind.

Mas Mexicali Cantina

Another great creation by Dr. Dave Magrogan, of the Rhino Living Philosophy, Kildares, and Doc Magrogan’s Oyster House fame, is Mas Mexicali Cantina, right in the heart of West Chester borough, a stone’s throw away from West Chester University.

Filling a void for great Mexican food in Chester County, if you’re looking to upgrade from Taco Bell, please come out. The ambiance is colorful, for the most part – avoid the “death room” I call it filled with crosses and an ode to Johnny Cash if that’s not your thing (second level by the restrooms). Downstairs has a large bar and always feels like a party – a great spot to grab a margarita or a Dos Equis. The second floor I just mentioned has another bar that gets quite crowded for the 30-under weekend nightlife crowd. But the jewel is the rooftop bar. There isn’t a better spot in town, in my humble opinion, than sitting at the bar outside or at one of the surrounding tables and having dinner with friends. You can walk up to the walls built to keep us all from falling off and get a great view of West Chester.

The food is great. Start with the guacamole and chips then move on to a large assortment of burritos, tacos, and they’re specialty the Fajitas Grande. You can make your own and they give you a lot of choices for toppings and meat – even tofu. Portions are very generous so come hungry. The service is excellent – one of the most attentive I can remember. Ask for Stacey – she was terrific.

Gullifty’s

Gulliftys is a great place to settle down, have a burger and some fries, enjoy a cold beer and hang out with some friends. After a long day of work sometimes this is where I come to kick back. They always have great food. They have plenty of beer on tap as well! I have enjoyed the company of my friends here often and plan to come back very soon.

At Gullifty’s, we take pride in serving great food in a fun friendly setting from mouth watering entrees like our Hop Devil London Broil, as well as unique pizzas, salads, soups and appetizers. You can count on finding a dish with enough great taste to match your own.

Duff’s Steaks

Located in the heart of Historical Manayunk.
Duff’s Steaks is one of the premier cheesteak
shops in Philadelphia. Duff’s combination of
a delicious “classic Philly cheesteak” menu
with an awareness of a contemporary design

Duff’s from all the rest.

Coming to visit Philly? Craving a true Philly Cheesesteak? Looking for a local place that not many travelers know about? This is the spot. Number one, Manayunk is a quaint little town on the Schuylkill River. Many shops and restaurants are in this area but if you want a true Philly Cheese Steak… Duff’s! We aren’t just saying this for the sake of it either. As we know, and will publish, many of the best steak shops in Philly, this is one you must try. With a good solid counter, some soda, and hidden away right off the main street, this place keeps the locals coming back for more. Get to Duff’s and don’t use that silly phrase “whizz wit” just order it how you want it.

As it says on their website,

LeBusWinnie’s LeBus Manayunk is warm and cozy, the staff, friendly and upbeat. You’ll be welcomed like an old friend. The atmosphere of the restaurant is charming as it is housed in a renovated old mill with the original brick walls intact and accented by colorful oil paintings by local artist Tony LaSalle.

Winnie’s serves up great food. As a patron for over 4 years, I can’t rave enough about this place. Try everything. But if you have to try just a few things get their in house bread. Is it tasty? No, it’s delicious! Try it soon.

They open in the morning so you can get your cup on the go before you get to work. Maggiano’s – King of Prussia, PA

Last night my girlfriend, Audra, and I went to Maggiano’s Little Italy, in King of Prussia. It is a chain Italian restaurant, with locations in 20 states and the District of Columbia, Besides King of Prussia, 12th and Filbert in Philadelphia is the other Southeast PA location for those of you living in my corner of the world.

Audra and I were joined by two very good friends of mine for a double date, so with four people, the waiter, a jovial young man, who was very knowledgeable in the menu, told us we had an option for “family style.” Unfortunately the wait staff was stretched, and we noticed the gentlemen serving the water were more attentive and available than the waiter himself. Maggiano’s is known for its generous portions. Family style allows you to order appetizers, salad, main courses, pastas, and dessert for an affordable price and the ability to have everything refilled an unlimited amount of times. The portion being as large as it is, doesn’t work well for those with smaller appetites, like my friend Nikki, and Audra. On the plus side, Maggiano’s prepares all their food in house, meaning it is made to order if you’d like to request something that isn’t exactly as appears on the menu. This is great for those with food allergies.

We decided to go with an appetizer of Tomato Caprese (Sliced beefsteak tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese; drizzled with Balsamic Vinaigrette), and a bottle of wine. I have to admit sadly, that they did not have my first choice. Looking to have a white I asked for the Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio only to find they were out if it since the day before and wouldn’t have it for another day or so. So keeping with the same vineyard we moved onto a red – the Merlot. Very nice dinner wine – medium body and dry, everyone enjoyed it and it complimented the red sauce of our platters well. I myself am only learning about wine but I was impressed that the restaurant appears to make the attempt to fill their wine list with decently priced Italian wines instead of just serving lower priced Californian wines. Although I’m sure those wines would have been just fine, it shows the effort Maggiano’s makes to create an Italian experience.

The “Little Italy” feel goes beyond just the wine list. The atmosphere of the restaurant is dimly lit, with old photographs of Philadelphia and the theme does stay very “Italiano,” from the music of Dino and Frank, the bread with olive oil on the table, to the statues on the stairwell, sitting rooms, and even the rugs. I felt like I was at my Italian aunt’s house or of that of a comparable Italian home. Complete with the noise level – loud, sounds become muffled, and from our table upstairs, you needed to raise your voice to hear the other people at your table of four. I wasn’t a fan of that.

Now I will get into our actual meal. Audra and I split Chicken Parmagaina with Angel Hair pasta while Dave and Nikki split a “Shrimp & Angel Hair al’ Arrabbiata,” which is angel hair pasta tossed with a blend of their Diavolo (lightly spicy) sauce with sautéed shrimp, roasted garlic and crushed red pepper. The “chicken parm” was breaded with a light covering of marinara sauce covered by melted provolone. Crunchy yet juicy, we really enjoyed it. Dave and Nikki enjoyed their meal as well saying that the sauce wasn’t too spicy; it added to the dish as opposed to smothering it. Neither the garlic or red pepper was too strong; overall the dish was well blended.

All in all Maggiano’s is a wonderful experience if you’re looking for large portions at a decent price and aren’t looking for frills or are picky on service. It is great for a double date between good friends, just fine for a bite while you’re visiting the King of Prussia Mall or prior to a movie at the Regal up the street. I wouldn’t recommend the restaurant for a romantic evening or an anniversary dinner. There are definitely classier and more intimate locations I’d suggest, but that’s for another posting.

Thanks for reading!
